Yarns with natural dye

It is normal for the wash water to be colored when washing an item dyed with natural dyes, especially during the first wash. This is the same as with many manufactured products, like jeans. This is called color bleeding, and it happens due to excess dye leaving the fiber.

The dyes used by our artisans are well-fixed thanks to effective mordants. Many washes are also carried out on-site, but color bleeding is difficult to avoid, especially with the presence of strong chemicals in our water and some detergents. The colors obtained with natural dyes are resistant to washing and the passage of time, but it is normal for them to gradually lose some of their vibrancy.

Therefore, it is important to wash these products in cold water with mild soap to preserve the dyes as much as possible. As a precaution, we recommend washing colors separately and/or washing skeins before knitting with distinct color combinations. Soaking in water with added vinegar is also an effective trick to prevent bleeding: use 1/5 white vinegar to 4/5 water, soak for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
